Oklahoma City Government

Oklahoma City has a council-manager form of government, with an elected mayor and council setting policy and an appointed city manager carrying out the day-to-day operations. The center of Oklahoma City's municipal government is historic City Hall, an art deco-style building situated on the western edge of the central business district in downtown.

Mick Cornett currently serves as mayor, having first been elected in 2004 and then re-elected in 2006. The City Manager is Jim Couch, who was appointed in late 2000. He serves on numerous city boards and agencies, and served as Assistant City Manager/MAPS (Metropolitan Area Projects) Director as well as Water/Wastewater Utilities Director prior to his service as city manager.

City Council & Wards

Eight councilpersons represent each of the 8 wards of Oklahoma City:

• Ward 1
  Represented by Gary Marrs, elected in a Special Primary in 2004 and re-elected in 2005. He is a third-generation firefighter, former fire chief, and is probably best known for his work as incident commander during the aftermath of the Murrah bombing in Oklahoma City in 1995.
• Ward 2
  Represented by Sam Bowman, who has been in Oklahoma City since 1970. He has served on numerous city boards and committees, as well as in other capacities, for 15 years.
• Ward 3
  Represented by Larry McAtee, who was elected in 2001 after serving a short while as interim Councilman. Aside from his work in the city, Councilman McAtee is also President of Ironsharpers, Inc., a consulting firm, and served in numerous leadership positions with Kimray, Inc. previous to that.
• Ward 4
  Represented by Pete White. Councilman White has lived in Ward Four all his life and was elected to represent the Ward in a 2005 runoff election. Councilman White served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve and was first elected to the City Council in 1982 to finish a vacated term. He was re-elected in 1985, served a four year term, and then returned in January 2005 at the Council's request to finish the term of a council member who had left.
• Ward 5
  Represented by J. Brian Walters, who was elected in the spring of 2007. Councilman Walters serves on several city authorities and is also active in various neighborhood organizations. He is a fourth generation Oklahoman.
• Ward 6
  Represented by Ann Simank, who is also a licensed social worker. She was elected to Council shortly before the Murrah bombing in the spring of 1995.
• Ward 7
  Represented by Willa Johnson, who has served on Council since 1993. She is actively involved with the American League of Cities, and is a staunch supporter of the City's youth leadership program, Youth Leadership Exchange and its related program, Youth Council of Oklahoma City.
• Ward 8
  Represented by Patrick Ryan, who was elected in the spring of 2005. Councilman Ryan previously owned Proflight Aviation Services, was CEO of the Laser Eye Network, Inc., and has also served as a consultant for St. Anthony Hospital.
